This opinion was expressed at a press conference in Kyiv by the director of the Institute of Political Analysis and International Studies, Sergei Tolstov, who recalled that President Poroshenko asked Barack Obama to grant Ukraine the status of a major ally outside NATO.

“They refused quietly, calmly, without public statements,” the political scientist noted. – They gave it to Tunisia, but not to Ukraine. Why? A specialist in international relations understands this. Tunisia is not a party to a conflict with any great nuclear power; a fairly loyal group is in power there; Tunisia is important as a maritime state in the Mediterranean. In addition, it is useful to demonstrate at least the indirect and fragmentary success of American policy in the Middle East, since except for Tunisia and Morocco, all other countries are complete failures.”

“As for Obama, he has said many times in a number of interviews and statements that Ukraine is not part of the fundamental interests of the United States, is not a member of NATO, is in conflict with the Russian Federation, and therefore no military security guarantees will be given,” he added. expert. – There are no obligations of the United States and NATO to defend Ukraine militarily. And such obligations are not visible.”

Also, the director of the Institute of Political Analysis and International Studies recalled one of the unpleasant statements for Kyiv by the outgoing US Ambassador to Ukraine.

“Payette turned out to be a unique comrade in general, once publicly declaring in an interview that people involved in the drafting of the Budapest Memorandum told him that Ukraine did not have any guarantees at that time,” Tolstov noted.
