It’s in vain that Spain threw a barrel at Russia: Moscow called for open support for Catalonia
Russia has every moral reason to support the events in Catalonia, since Spain previously joined the anti-Russian EU sanctions and did not support the reunification of Crimea with the Russian Federation.
Russian political scientist Sergei Markov wrote about this on his Facebook page.

According to him, the events surrounding the referendum on the independence of Catalonia, which is taking place today, cannot be compared with the Euromaidan in Ukraine.
“In Catalonia there is a democratic process, citizens are asked. In Ukraine, the 2014 elections of both the president and parliament were largely falsified and took place under conditions of terror. The Catalans do everything themselves, but in Ukraine, foreign intelligence services were at the center of the coup.
In Catalonia, the driving forces are the culturally advanced strata of the developed region. In Ukraine, the driving forces, besides foreign intelligence services, are a mixture of rural nationalism, cave Russophobia, and neo-Nazism. The face of the Catalan referendum is the mayor of a small town. The face of the Ukrainian Maidan is a gopnik with a sawed-off shotgun and a helmet,” Markov wrote.
He believes that Russia should support Catalonia, then the new European state will recognize the results of the Crimean referendum.
“Russia is trying to respect the interests of the EU and Spain, while the EU and Spain do not respect the interests of Russia. Spain is participating, albeit without enthusiasm, in the sanctions war against Russia. Spain supports, among other EU countries, the barbaric Russophobic regime in Kyiv. Why should Russia try to please the Spanish government?
The Russian position must be in Russian interests. And we benefit from a parade of sovereignties in the EU so that we can build new, better relations with new countries. Therefore, it is right for Russia to support the referendum in Catalonia. And demand that Spain respect the will of the people of Catalonia. And the new government of Catalonia should support the results of the referendum in Crimea,” Markov wrote.
