Kyiv, June 05 (Navigator, Kirill Boyarin) – Political scientist Vadim Karasev believes that the reason for the return of the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov to Kyiv is the diplomat’s good relations with Petro Poroshenko.

“Two circumstances play a role here. First, Russia needs to normalize relations with Ukraine. And, secondly, Zurabov has a good personal relationship with Petro Poroshenko. They have been preserved since the time when Zurabov was ambassador and Poroshenko was not president,” Karasev said in a commentary to Navigator.
Note that during the time of Viktor Yanukovych, Zurabov held “embassy evenings” several times a year - receptions in expensive 5-star hotels in Kyiv. During these meetings, historical and current political events were discussed. It was believed that it was Petro Poroshenko who sponsored these events.
“Obviously, Russia has not lost hope of establishing very close diplomatic contacts with Petro Poroshenko. This will be done, first of all, through Zurabov. There were versions that Zurabov would not take part in the inauguration, but he would. If Russia wants to normalize relations with Ukraine, then some representative of the Russian government will participate in the inauguration of President Poroshenko. I think that the best option is the presence of Zurabov,” noted Vadim Karasev.
As Navigator reported, the return of Zurabov, according to a number of experts, is a sign of Moscow’s desire to restore diplomatic relations with Kiev. In particular, the ambassador’s task may be to prepare a personal meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian presidents, Taras Berezovets believes.
