According to Deputy Minister of Culture Tamara Mazur, previous requests from Ukraine to UNESCO regarding the Bakhchisarai Palace and Tauride Chersonese also remained unanswered.
“UNESCO is abstracting itself from this problem. We make our appeals within the framework of the existing conventions on the preservation of heritage (1954) and on the movement of cultural property (1970). It seems that UNESCO has not fully formulated its attitude towards the issue of the occupation of Crimea,” Mazur complains.
The deputy minister admitted that there could be a conspiracy with Russia's participation. Let us note that UNESCO is currently headed by Russian woman Irina Bokova, who recently ran for the post of UN Secretary General.
“No matter how many times we tried to raise the issue of preserving heritage in Crimea, we were asked not to politicize this issue. At the last meeting of the committee (state parties to the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illegal Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property - note), we raised the issue of moving Aivazovsky’s paintings from the Feodosia Museum to the Tretyakov Gallery. Our question was put on the agenda, but due to the fact that the commission was unable to form its opinion on this issue, it was not considered. We were given the floor at the end of the meeting, after which the Russian representatives were given the floor,” complains the Ukrainian official.
Let us remind you that the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine considers the construction of a canopy over the Khan’s Palace in Bakhchisarai an “enemy act” and demands to stop construction work.
