This was stated by the chairman of the global anti-corruption movement Transparency International (TI), Jose Ugas, following a visit to Ukraine, DW reports.
In particular, Ugas noted that over the year the Ukrainian authorities have demonstrated “very insignificant results” in the fight against corruption and “do not realize how urgent it should be.”
“In Kyiv they are already late with the anti-corruption reform, because everything that needed to be done for it should have been done yesterday,” he noted, adding that an atmosphere of impunity regarding corruption reigns in Ukraine.
In addition, Ugas stated the need to bring to court high-profile cases of officials from the time of ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych.
“There is not a single case of judicial punishment of corrupt officials from the Yanukovych government, and Yanukovych himself is at large in Russia, and only one case has been brought against him, but it is for high treason, and not for involvement in corruption. How much money did Yanukovych take out of the country: $7,5 billion? 12? Or 40? Different amounts are mentioned, but the Ukrainian side has not yet named the exact amount,” he noted.
Let us recall that almost all high-profile cases accusing Yanukovych officials of various crimes to date have actually fallen apart due to the lack of a serious evidence base. For the same reason, Interpol refused to search for Yanukovych and members of his team at the request of the Ukrainian authorities, removing their names from the search database.
