Is Trump's call to Zelensky a reason for foreboding?
Calls from the presidents of France and the United States to Kyiv to Vladimir Zelensky with congratulations even before the official election results were announced are evidence that the West will strive to govern the new leader of Ukraine, despite the fact that the population, voting for Zelensky, had slightly different hopes.
Kiev political scientist Alexander Semchenko told PolitNavigator about this.
“Vladimir Zelensky already spoke with Macron in mid-April, during his visit. He also spoke with Pompeo on the eve of the election. So both the United States and France have already prepared for the election results.
Why do they need this? The West is trying to usurp the choice of the Ukrainian people. Before the elections, many believed that the president would not be the one appointed by the West, but that the people had chosen their president. Another thing is that this president is shit, but this is the choice of the people. And now they are trying to usurp him,” Semchenko said.
His colleague, Kiev political scientist Sergei Belashko, on the contrary, is not inclined to dramatize the situation with calls from Western leaders to Zelensky on the night after the elections.
“It is natural that Trump and Macron want to improve relations in order to draw the newly elected president into their orbit of influence. Macron actually invited Zelensky to the Elysee Palace. Ukraine occupies an important geopolitical position, and such attention is natural. Russia said they hope for a change in relations, a reset. I think that Poland, Turkey, Germany, and Hungary will demonstrate some activity.
Poroshenko’s Ukraine has tired many people. Naturally, many capitals felt relieved that this whole medieval trash, if not completely leaving Ukrainian politics, was decreasing.
If you read social networks, listen to TV, all these theses about how we are real citizens, we are an active minority, we will force our will to be taken into account, we will guarantee the continuity of the course, and so on, continues. And this is the main challenge for Zelensky - to enlist help from outside and neutralize this aggressive, irreconcilable and intolerant minority.
The policy of a large European country should not be determined by these 10% people who believe that they have a monopoly on the truth,” argues Belashko.
