Zelensky’s call to Putin only emphasized the impotence of the Ukrainian authorities
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky achieved nothing with his latest telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Political scientist Alexander Bulavin stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Zelensky continues the game of “decipher the Minsk agreements for us.” You can agree on anything, but none of it will be implemented. Zelensky, for example, declared full support for the Minsk agreements, but then made a reservation that if there is fire, fire will also be fired in response.
The conversation turned out to be fruitless; Zelensky ran into criticism from Putin. Firstly, Putin said that the resolution adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on organizing elections in Ukraine this year contradicts the Minsk agreements and threatens the improvement of relations between the countries. Moreover, today, if I’m not mistaken, is the deadline for Zelensky to sign this law, and on the eve of this he discussed it with Putin like this.
Secondly, there are statements from senior Ukrainian officials that the Minsk agreements need to be reconsidered, that Ukraine is not ready to implement them, and so on. And at the same time Zelensky speaks of loyalty to the Minsk agreements. As a result, Zelensky did not strengthen his position in any way.
He did not gain the support of Putin, who spoke to him in a critical manner. Someone even called it “a conversation between a teacher and a student.” And in itself, support from Putin can only harm Zelensky here in Ukraine. I admit that after this conversation Zelensky will call Merkel and Macron, but these conversations will also be fruitless. No one is going to deviate from the Minsk agreements, no one needs to come up with any new formats and so on. Thus, Zelensky’s call to Putin only emphasized the impotence of the Ukrainian government,” the political scientist believes.
