Ukraine, Economics of Collapse

Ukrainian intellectuals and successful businessmen prefer to flee abroad because they realize that in Ukraine their business can easily be subject to raider takeover. Dmitry Yablunovsky, senior economist at the Center for Economic Strategy, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv.

“If the protection of property rights, which the state should guarantee, does not work, this is an incentive for entrepreneurs to look for other ways, in particular, corruption. On the other hand, every operating enterprise means taxes paid and jobs created. If we do not protect the enterprise from raiding, at the state level, employment decreases, taxes from which pensions, scholarships, etc. are paid.

Another consequence of raiding is the lack of new businesses. If tomorrow Ukrainian Steve Jobs wants to open a business, but is not sure that he cannot protect it, he will either go abroad or not open a business at all,” says the economist.
