Ukraine is a particularly malicious debtor to the IMF
In terms of the amount of debt, Ukraine is now in second place after Greece among the countries that are helped by the IMF. Kyiv already owes $13 billion. If a new loan of $1,9 billion is received, Ukraine will move to first place.
Economist Viktor Skarshevsky announced this today at a press conference in Kyiv.
“Ukraine means a lot to the IMF, and it needs to show to its creditors that they are achieving positive results here. This is where politics comes into play. If everything went according to the letter of the memorandums that were concluded, the IMF would not have the right to issue loans to Ukraine at all,” Skarshevsky said.
The entire loan received this year, the expert emphasized, will be used to pay off debts to the same IMF, to which Ukraine must pay $2018 billion in 2,5. This has been happening in recent years.
Therefore, Skarshevsky believes, Ukraine will receive a loan even if it does not fulfill the IMF conditions.
“Under the latest program, out of 11 obligations, 3 were fulfilled. The Ukrainian government uses any amount for its own PR,” Skarshevsky said.
