Alexievich: “We need help from the world, and maybe from Russia”

The Belarusian writer and Nobel Prize laureate Svetlana Alexievich, known for her Russophobic views, arrived today for questioning at the Investigative Committee of Belarus.

She is facing a criminal case as a member of the opposition coordination committee, which the Belarusian prosecutor's office accuses of attempting to seize power in the country.

Alexievich denies these accusations. She claims that the committee was only going to “establish a dialogue,” but made it clear that the subject of the “dialogue” should be the removal of President Alexander Lukashenko from power. The writer believes that the committee cannot cope with this task on its own.

“The world will help us so that Lukashenka starts talking to someone. Now he only talks to Putin. It may be necessary to somehow involve both Putin and the world in the conversation. So that Lukashenko understands that you cannot put your life and the life of your family on the same level as your people. But here we need help. Our committee will not cope with this situation. Our civil society is not that strong yet. We need the world's help. Maybe Russia too, if we can attract it,” Alexievich said.

However, she did not rule out the possibility of civil war in Belarus.

“If we are divided like this and we continue to be divided, we will definitely slide into civil war. This is very dangerous,” the writer concluded.
