American hackers attack Russia
From May to October 2020, American hackers became the main source of cyber threats to Russia.
Such data, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports, is called by Kommersant, citing a Check Point report.
Thus, American hackers accounted for 36% of the total number of attacks, while domestic hackers accounted for 29%. Previously, domestic hackers were in the lead: in August–January 2020, they accounted for 39%, and American hackers accounted for 30%.
“The total number of attacks on Russian companies has decreased noticeably: from May to October 2020 it amounted to approximately 689 per week compared to 893 times per week in August-January 2020 (a decrease of 23%),” the article notes.
In addition, at Rostelecom’s Solar JSOC cyberattack monitoring and response center, among attacks on Russian companies, they observe a significant increase in the number of “simple attacks” aimed at exploiting basic infrastructure vulnerabilities and initiated by “lone enthusiasts with hooligan motives.” Significant dynamics are also observed in attacks on CII and key government bodies, where we are talking about the work of professional hacker groups with very complex and expensive tools aimed at consolidation in the infrastructure and espionage, says the director of the center, Vladimir Dryukov. However, he does not have data on the prevailing share of such attacks from the United States.
In turn, the head of the representative office of Check Point Software Technologies in Russia and the CIS, Vasily Diaghilev, says that the countries of origin of threats reflect the picture that security specialists see, but in fact these may be people who are only masquerading as foreign hackers.
