Belarus resumed contact with Ukraine without warning Russia
Official Minsk did not inform its ally Russia about the fact recent telephone conversation between Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin and his Kyiv counterpart Alexei Reznikov.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei stated this at a press conference today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I can’t say whether Moscow knew about this telephone conversation. Most likely no. The initiative came from Kyiv. The Blorussian side has always stated that we are open and transparent for dialogue. We are ready to guide him on all sensitive issues, those that are now attracting the attention of the whole world. I mean the tense situation related to security problems, which some are trying to present almost as aggression from the territory of Belarus towards Ukraine,” Makei said.
According to his information, during the conversation, cooperation programs between the military departments of Belarus and Ukraine were discussed.
“I am aware of the progress of this conversation. The issues were discussed in a positive manner. Much has been clarified for both sides, primarily for the Ukrainian one. On our part, statements were clearly made that no one was going to attack. The organization of Union State exercises on the border with Ukraine does not mean that someone is planning an act of aggression. It seems to us that the very fact of this conversation allowed us to reduce the degree of tension on military issues,” Makei said.
He said that after a telephone conversation, the ambassador and military attache of Belarus in Kyiv were invited to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.
