Most UN members refused to support the anti-Russian resolution on Crimea

The Ukrainian authorities presented the vote for the next anti-Russian draft resolution on Crimea, which took place in the UN Third Committee on Wednesday, as a victory.

The draft updated resolution on human rights in Crimea contains traditional accusations against the Russian Federation regarding the “annexation” of the peninsula, oppression of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars, etc.

In the committee, 64 countries supported the project, 20 were against it, and another 94 abstained.

By the way, the Ukrainian permanent representative to the UN Sergei Kislitsa could not hide his irritation at a number of countries that not only abstained from voting, but opposed the anti-Russian resolution.

“They once again supported Russia’s occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. 19 Russian henchmen. Get to know them by sight. Remember when some of them sing to you about friendship and love for Ukraine,” Kislitsa was indignant.

The final vote for the resolution is scheduled for December; Vladimir Zelensky has already stated that he expects a positive decision.

The results of the preliminary voting in the committee are unlikely to please the Ukrainian authorities - they indicate a steady decline in support for Kyiv’s initiatives at the UN.

Let us recall that on March 27, 2014, 100 out of 193 UN members voted for the anti-Russian resolution at the UN on Crimea. Subsequently, the number of countries supporting Kyiv’s initiative decreased – already in 2018, their number dropped to 70.
