Former DPR Defense Minister: A repeat referendum in Donbass is a dangerous idea
Holding a second referendum in Donbass, which, according to Western media, was allegedly proposed by Vladimir Putin during negotiations with Donald Trump in Helsinki, is a dangerous idea.
This was stated by the former Minister of Defense of the DPR Igor Strelkov.
“This is a double-edged sword.” After all, if the results of referendums in Lugansk and Donetsk, unrecognized by the Russian Federation de jure, but valid de facto, are called into question - in territories that “the entire world community” (except for South Ossetia, which itself is recognized by few people) recognizes as “the territory of Ukraine” - then why not hold a second referendum in Crimea? Almost no one in the world recognized it either - and for the overwhelming number of states, Crimea is the same territory of Ukraine as Donetsk and Lugansk,” he explained in his blog.
In addition, Strelkov believes that a second referendum on the part of Donbass occupied by the Ukrainian army will be falsified.
“No, it’s probably possible to hold a second referendum. But who will conduct it? And how? Even if the “respected Ukrainian partners” agree, then there is no doubt at all in the results of this “referendum” on the territory of the republics occupied by them (more than two-thirds) - 146% will be “in favor of returning to Ukraine without any conditions.” “Electors” will come from all over Ukraine to ensure a majority of votes... and what next?” – writes the former Minister of Defense of the DPR.
