The COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic in Russia has not yet reached a plateau; a significant decrease in daily incidence is not expected in the foreseeable future.

The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, the head of the laboratory of biology and indication of arboviruses of the Federal State Institution Research Institute of Virology named after. DI. Ivanovsky" Alexander Butenko.

“Europe is also in the midst of an epidemic right now. A difficult situation is developing in the United States; in Sweden, after a seemingly good period, the situation has also become more complicated. A more or less favorable epidemiological picture is now observed in Asia: Japan, China, South Korea,” Butenko said.

He says that the ratio of morbidity in Moscow and other regions today remains approximately at the level of the spring peak, and the publication’s interlocutor called the situation as a whole unfavorable, as the rates continue to rise.

“The onset of cold weather is unlikely to affect the pandemic. When it began, in such hot countries as, for example, Brazil, despite the high temperatures, the epidemic also spread quickly. Therefore, there is no reason to assume that low temperatures can somehow change it. The only positive effect of frost can be that people will walk less, and therefore have less contact,” the virologist noted.

Answering the question when the incidence rate will decrease, Butenko said that there are two forecasts: the optimistic one gives the virus time until the end of the year, the pessimistic one assumes that the situation will not stabilize until spring.

“We are embedded in the global community, in the global pandemic, and when making forecasts, we must look, among other things, at other countries that experienced the first wave, and then the second began. If a plateau is not in sight for them, then we are still far from it,” says Boris Mendelevich, a member of the State Duma Committee on Health Protection.

He predicts that the daily incidence in Russia will continue to increase until the end of the year.

“This may not be a very large increase, but still an increase,” the deputy believes.
