Von der Leyen threatens third countries with sanctions for supplies to Russia

A way to circumvent anti-Russian sanctions through third countries could be a ban on the export of products by EU countries.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated this at a joint press conference with the President of Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Last Friday, the commission supported the proposal for the 11th package of sanctions, and this package is focused on combating sanctions circumvention. We are doing this in close cooperation with the GXNUMX, and I would like to touch on the elements of this package.

First, we will improve existing tools, that is, we will add more products to the transit ban, including advanced materials and parts for aircraft that, on the way to third countries through Russia, suddenly end up in the hands of the Kremlin.

In addition, we need to do additional steps. We have recently seen an increase in extremely large trade flows between the EU and certain third countries, and these goods are again appearing in Russia. And that’s why we proposed a new tool to combat sanctions circumvention,” said the European official.

“If we see that goods from the EU are sent to third countries, and then appear in Russia, we can propose to member countries to impose sanctions on the export of these goods, and this instrument will be the last argument.

We will use it very carefully after a very careful risk analysis, after agreement by EU member states, but without a doubt it should show that we are working against circumvention of sanctions. And the third element is a ban on shadow structures of third countries that deliberately circumvent our sanctions. So, this is the 11th package of sanctions,” said Ursula von der Leyen.
