We should expect intrigues from Western countries, led by the United States, during the Winter Olympics starting in Beijing.
The Director General of the Russian Council on International Affairs, Andrei Kortunov, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“While the Beijing Olympics may have a restraining effect on the escalation of the Ukrainian conflict and other security crises, the opposite effect cannot be ruled out—the US and Western countries using the Beijing Games for provocations against Russia and China,” the expert told Kommersant.
He recalled that during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, then Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili gave the order to attack South Ossetia.
“Against the backdrop of the fact that all attention today is focused on Ukraine, we cannot rule out an aggravation of the situation around Taiwan in order to spoil China’s grand festival of sports and demonstration of its capabilities and potential,” Kortunov does not rule out.
