The head of WHO called on the West to follow the example of Russia and share the vaccine

The best way to combat the global coronavirus is for states that have already vaccinated healthcare workers and the elderly to share vaccines with other countries.

The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said this while speaking at the Ukraine-30 forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

As you know, Russia is actively supplying its vaccine to poor countries.

“Around the world, the number of vaccines has exceeded the number of people infected. On the one hand, this is good news and a wonderful achievement in such a short period of time. But at the same time, three-quarters of the vaccines have been administered in 10 countries that account for 60% of global GDP, and almost two-thirds of the countries, home to 2,5 billion people, do not have a single vaccine yet. So, the population has a serious risk of transmission.

We understand that all authorities are trying to protect their people, their populations, but most countries that have already vaccinated health workers and the elderly - the best way to protect the world is if they share vaccines with other countries so that they can do it too,” Ghebreyesus said.

“The longer we take to vaccinate the people most at risk, the more opportunity we give the virus to mutate and evade the vaccine,” he added, warning that if the virus is not contained around the world, there is a danger of returning to square one.
