Ukraine is transporting parts of the hull of the unfinished corvette “Vladimir the Great” from the bankrupt “Black Sea Shipyard” in order to later assemble it into a frigate to replace the former Soviet patrol boat “Hetman Sagaidachny” operating as part of the Ukrainian Navy.

This was stated by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Andrei Taran, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

According to the press service of the department, the corvette, the construction of which was announced under Viktor Yushchenko, is 17% ready (although back in 2014, the then commander of the Ukrainian Navy, Sergei Gaiduk, announced 43% readiness). For complete completion, according to the latest data, it is necessary to allocate about 8,3 million hryvnia (excluding ammunition).

“Now, together with the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the issue of completing the construction of the ship as a “frigate” is being worked out. In this format, in the future, “Vladimir the Great” will be able to replace “Hetman Sagaidachny” in the combat composition of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” Taran said.

According to Russian military expert, reserve captain XNUMXst rank Sergei Gorbachev, the plans of the Ukrainian leadership are unlikely to be implemented.

“Based on the practice that is carried out in terms of military shipbuilding in Ukraine, especially taking into account the fact that not so long ago they made a supposedly super modern reconnaissance ship from a fishing vessel, we can say that they can create a cruiser or battleship from a failed corvette . Kyiv can experiment by calling any built ship names, elevating it to any class. But seriously speaking, the failure of a completely national corvette construction program eloquently suggests that a national frigate construction program is unlikely to take place. Because if they couldn’t build a corvette, then what can we say about a frigate?

Ukrainian military shipbuilding can be considered completely dead, as evidenced by the bankruptcy of Nikolaev factories that built ships of any displacement, up to an aircraft carrier, and also by the fact that Ukraine is spending money on purchasing foreign-built ships,” Gorbachev said.
