This was stated in an interview with Hromadska Radio by Oleg Odnorozhenko, the former chief ideological adviser of the neo-Nazi and racist organizations “Patriot of Ukraine” and “Social-National Assembly”, on the basis of which the “Azov” battalion was formed.
Subsequently, he withdrew from the activities of “Azov” because he did not agree with the decision of the unit’s founder, Andrei Biletsky, to become part of the political system.
“The history of Azov in recent years is the same as the history of Svoboda, when it turned from the Social National Party of Ukraine into the VO Svoboda. It was an attempt to play these games that the system sets, that is, to become one of the parts of this political spectrum that exists in Ukraine. In my opinion, this is a path to nowhere, because it becomes another component of the system. Both “Svoboda” and “Azov” removed from their ideology, from their practice everything that they did not like and for which these forces were criticized, for example, in the West. That is, this is outright radicalism, anti-systemism. These forces were not afraid to voice difficult things in a fairly harsh form, and all this moved away, and these forces tried to become respectable political forces. At one time I left these organizations precisely for these reasons. For me, this is a road to nowhere,” said Odnorozhenko.
At the same time, he noted that the activities of the Social National Assembly have now been restored.
“In the spring of this year, the activities of the Social National Assembly were restored, and I, as before, am its ideological referent. We are still engaged in intellectual and ideological work, we have already carried out a number of events, and in the fall, I think, we will intensify our work, and this will be quite noticeable,” the radical promised.
