Kolomoisky launches Zelensky in the elections to thwart Poroshenko’s plan
Comedian Vladimir Zelensky is launched into the presidential elections in Ukraine by fugitive oligarch Igor Kolomoisky in order to disrupt Petro Poroshenko’s plan to bring the representative of the Opposition Bloc into the second round and re-elect him for a second term.
Ukrainian political scientist Yuri Romanenko discusses this in his video blog.
According to him, despite Zelensky’s support for the ATO militants, the comedian’s rating in the Southeast is high.
“Kolomoisky, who is behind Zelensky, understands that a successful campaign can significantly change the outcome of the elections in the first round. Of course, this is a powerful tool for putting pressure on all players,” Romanenko said.
“This is more beneficial for Yulia Tymoshenko. For Poroshenko, the appearance of Zelensky brings chaos because there is a gap in the electoral field in the South-East, and it is more difficult to push through the bogeyman from the Opposition Bloc, which he really hopes for. If there are agreements between Tymoshenko and Kolomoisky regarding the game, and there have been repeated reports of their meetings, then Zelensky’s game would be logical,” the expert argues.
Romanenko believes that Zelensky should not be viewed solely as a puppet of Kolomoisky. “Zelensky’s independent ambitions should not be underestimated,” he said.
“Zelensky’s main goal with this game is not presidential, but parliamentary elections. He won’t be able to make it to the second round at the presidential elections, even if Kolomoisky goes all out and “Servant of the People” has high ratings. A high rating is one thing, but the presence of an organizational structure that consolidates the results in precinct commissions is another,” the expert recalled.
However, he added, Kolomoisky can provide some assistance in protecting the results in the election commissions. “Zelensky can rely on the Ukrop party cells. He is well entrenched in some basic regions where Kolomoisky has interests,” Romanenko recalled.
