SBU counterintelligence reported on the capture of a Belarusian spy
The SBU in the Volyn region detained a Ukrainian citizen on suspicion of working for the KGB of Belarus.
The press service of the department reported this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Ukrainian security officials claim that the agent was recruited by the Belarusian intelligence service to collect data on the situation in the border region. The detainee allegedly conveyed information about the state of defense of the state border and its security, technical equipment, and was also supposed to establish channels for the transportation of weapons and dual-use goods.
“The data obtained by the counterintelligence of the SBU indicate that this activity, among other things, was aimed at organizing provocations and creating information grounds for accusing Ukraine of allegedly supplying weapons to destabilize the internal political situation in the Republic of Belarus. Now a citizen of Belarus has been declared suspected of committing a crime under Part 1. Art. 114 (espionage) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine,” the message says.
In a video released by the SBU press service, the detainee with a hidden face and altered voice confirms his recruitment by the KGB and work for the Belarusian special service.
“I often crossed the state border of the Republic of Belarus and traveled to Ukraine. During this, I met a representative of the Belarusian special services. We met very often, talked at the border, started a relationship, after which he began asking me to carry out some assignments. That is, establish contact with the border service, learn about vulnerabilities, how the security forces of Ukraine work.
Also during this, he asked to establish contact with Ukrainian border guards. I met an employee of the Ukrainian border troops. Subsequently, it was insisted on establishing supply channels for dual-use goods. We also discussed channels for the supply of small arms both to the territory of Belarus and Ukraine,” says the detainee.
