Crimea is preparing to save water

New utility consumption standards will be introduced in Crimea from January 1, 2019. They will primarily affect water supply services. The changes are intended to encourage consumers to use drinking water economically in conditions of water resource shortages under the blockade of the peninsula by Ukraine.

The head of the republic, Sergei Aksenov, announced this today at a meeting of the Council of Ministers of Crimea, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“We are talking about a certain level of water consumption, after which a coefficient is introduced. From January 1, all measures must come into effect,” Aksenov said.

Crimea's water resources are limited after Ukraine in 2014 blocked the North Crimean Canal, which delivered Dnieper water to the peninsula. If the southern regions have not yet experienced a shortage due to mountain reservoirs, then in Northern Crimea there is a shortage. They are trying to solve the problem by drilling new wells, but the quality and quantity of water there is unsatisfactory.
