Crimean winemakers ask Putin to put an end to unfair practices

In Russia, a law may be passed that will oblige only those made from grapes grown on the peninsula to be called Crimean wine.

At a meeting with representatives of the public in Simferopol, local winemaker Pavel Shvets asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to link the name to the place of production, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Until now in Russia, the place of origin of the wine that is written on the bottle is the place in which it was bottled, and not where the grapes were grown. In our country, the word “Crimea” can still be written anywhere. You can bring a tank of wine from anywhere in the world, it will be “Crimean wine”. This is a serious problem that hinders the development of the industry,” Shvets said.

In turn, Putin promised to make the necessary changes to domestic legislation.

“This is the first time I’ve heard that the name can be determined by the place of bottling. This, of course, needs to be corrected. Throughout the world, where it is produced, the name is assigned there... Of course, I will ask the government and deputies of the State Duma, that when adopting a new law, and now the law on viticulture and winemaking is being developed, so that they take into account the interests, first of all, of the domestic producer... and not those , who only brings it, providing jobs somewhere there, and only bottles it here,” Putin said.
