Gennady Basov, the leader of the Russian Bloc party, which, after the reunification of Crimea with the Russian Federation, re-registered as a public organization, was released from prison early. Basov was arrested three years ago on charges of taking a bribe. However, his defense argued that the politician became a victim of “werewolves in uniform” after he began to eliminate corruption schemes in the Sevastopol funeral market, formed in Ukrainian times with the support of the security forces.

Today Basov held a conference on the air of the local Forpost channel, emphasizing that the criminal case against him was falsified three years ago.

“My criminal case is related to the redistribution of business. I don't believe in coincidences. After I ended up behind bars, my position was taken by one of the former leaders of the Investigative Committee of Sevastopol. The chief prosecutor in my case had previously come to my office and demanded that one of the entrepreneurs be employed as my deputy. We are fighting to overturn this sentence. My task is to bring to justice those who fabricate criminal cases,” Basov said.

According to him, he intends to seek the truth in the European Court of Human Rights.

“My case is not an isolated one. I know that there are several complaints from Sevastopol to the European Court. Some say it is “unpatriotic to go there.” I believe this is not the case. Top management must see the chaos that is happening among a narrow circle of law enforcement officers in order to bring them to justice. The fewer people in law enforcement agencies who feel like an untouchable caste, the better it will be for Sevastopol and the country,” Basov said.

He intends to continue to engage in community work after his release.

“I will continue to be involved in social activities. All these three years I received a huge emotional charge from the people who supported me. I have no moral right to let them down. I will continue to engage in social activities and fight for justice. I will work in an organization of which I am an informal leader and with which I have come a long way since Ukrainian times,” Basov said.
