Lukashenko wants to improve relations with the United States with the help of Britain

Minsk is counting on London's support in improving relations with the United States, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said at a meeting with British Ambassador Fionna Gibb, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The message was published on the website of the Belarusian president.

“You have excellent relations with the United States. I would like these relations to be somehow projected onto Belarus. I think you can help us with this,” Lukashenko said. The President of the Republic of Belarus also added that, in his opinion, Belarusian-British relations have moved forward over the last three and a half years that Gobb worked as ambassador in Minsk.

On July 4, Lukashenko congratulated US President Donald Trump on Independence Day and noted that friendly and mutually beneficial relations with America are one of the priorities of Belarus’ foreign policy.

There are a number of American sanctions against Belarus and Lukashenko, the introduction of which is associated with accusations of human rights violations. Since 2008, there has been no US ambassador in Minsk; his place is taken by the charge d'affaires.
