Lukashenko will turn his back on Russia again, but there is no replacement for him yet - political scientist
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko may turn his back on Russia again and continue flirting with the West when the situation in his country stabilizes.
German political scientist Alexander Rahr stated this on radio Baltkom, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the expert, Russia understands this, but so far there is no replacement for Lukashenko.
“As for Lukashenko personally, well, he constantly makes the same moves. When the European Union puts too much pressure on him on human rights and democracy issues, he flees to Russia and demands protection there.
When Russia tells Belarus that we can’t sponsor your economy as much anymore, you have to pay world prices and let’s, if you don’t want to, then you need to create a Union State, then meet us halfway and let’s integrate our economies more closely, Lukashenko runs to the West and says that Russia wants to eat him.
And so he continues this policy for two decades and everyone already knows this. Therefore, it seems to me that Moscow understands perfectly well that in six months, in a few months, Lukashenko may again try to come to an agreement with the West and move away from Russia. He is, I would say, an unbalanced politician in the political sense, but at the same time, Russia also understands that, in principle, there is no replacement for him now,” Rahr said.
