Madrid responded to Catalan independence by introducing direct rule and abolishing autonomy

“The Spanish Senate has approved proposals to take control of Catalonia after the Catalan parliament voted for independence,” the report said.

As is known, Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution allows the central government to take coercive measures to ensure that an autonomous region fulfills its constitutional obligations.
