Merkel will be asked to prove that Europe is not Ukraine
Journalists from the RT channel want to know the reaction of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to the arrest in Kyiv of the editor-in-chief of RIA Novosti Ukraine, Kirill Vyshinsky. They will ask her a question today at a press conference in Sochi, where Merkel is meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan stated this today at a protest rally near the Ukrainian embassy in Moscow.
“If we do not receive an unambiguous, civilized reaction from Europe to the detention of a journalist, we will understand that what Ukraine is like, so is Europe,” Simonyan said.
According to her, so far Western journalists have not shown solidarity with their Russian colleagues who are protesting against the arrest of Kirill Vyshinsky in Kyiv.
“Journalists practically did not support us. The BBC responded that they had covered the situation on Russian and Ukrainian websites. That is, in their opinion, the international community is not interested in this situation. Just think, 15 years in prison for journalistic activities. I can say: good riddance. One German magazine answered us that there are no journalists in Rossiya Segodnya,” Simonyan said.
The general director of MIA Rossiya Segodnya, Dmitry Kiselev, is also dissatisfied with the international reaction.
“The OSCE acted sluggishly. The State Department representative shared the concern of the Ukrainian authorities about “aggressive propaganda from Russia.” That is, she practically gave carte blanche for reprisals against journalists. The French Foreign Ministry refused to comment at all. Therefore our hopes are dissolved. It would be logical to expect more active participation of international journalistic and human rights organizations. The only one who spoke out was Human Rights Watch,” Kiselev said.
