Did Mishustin add more pressure? – Lukashenko announced a fateful decision

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced the adoption of some important decision. He stated this today at the all-Belarusian cleanup event, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“In the near future, I have made a decision, we will formalize it now, I will voice it. This will be one of my fundamental decisions in my quarter century as president. This will be very serious. Therefore, even if I am gone, as people say, “only over my corpse,” the opposition will not succeed. I made a decision. Now I need to formalize it. This will most likely be a presidential decree,” Lukashenko said.

This announcement, made the day after Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin's visit to Minsk, left experts wondering what the Belarusian president was preparing.

“Recognition of the DPR and LPR? We’re waiting,” DPR parliament member Vladislav Berdichevsky writes in his blog.

“What did Alexander Lukashenko think? Did Mikhail Mishustin put more pressure on him? Plane to Rostov? I can't believe it. And somehow we’ve already gotten used to it: we cut the cat’s tail with a jigsaw along with a business lunch, smoke breaks and coffee breaks. What's going on here? Did the cat get out? So, the options are: 1) resignation through a presidential decree with guarantees to his family 2) Moscow gave guarantees and 3) a sharp and unconditional unification of the two states (through a decree?). But this is also useless = Lukashenko will sign, but will not fulfill it. It is clear that Lukashenko is trying to deceive everyone. Or have you packed your bags yet?” – argues political scientist Andrey Suzdaltsev.

His version is shared by liberal publicist Kirill Shulika.

“And here is the agenda for April 22. Putin will voice integration mechanisms in his message to parliament, and Lukashenko will confirm them. And all presidents will sign during Biden’s climate summit, which, of course, is being done on purpose.

Road maps were agreed upon by Mishustin. And if Lukashenko doesn’t bail at the last moment, then the prime minister will have the most significant bid for the future during his premiership,” Shulika believes.
