This is stated in the analytical report on the key threats and challenges to the modern world order, prepared for the International Security Conference, which will be held in Munich, сообщает Kommersant.
The document devotes a separate chapter to Russia, which provides data from a December Levada Center survey, according to which 72% of respondents consider their country a “great power,” whereas in 1999 only 31% of respondents gave such an answer.
“The impression of Russia’s growing power is not unfounded, as Moscow has managed to significantly increase its regional and global influence in recent years,” the report notes.
It follows from the document that almost everything that Russia can “account as an asset” is a challenge or threat for the West.
“The war in and around Ukraine, fueled by Moscow, has frozen Kyiv’s chances of becoming a member of the EU or NATO. A disinformation campaign in the run-up to the 2017 French presidential election was largely unsuccessful, but interference in the U.S. election process in 2016 paid dividends for Moscow. And in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia managed to create a network of structures politically and economically dependent on it, allowing it to directly influence decision-making,” the authors of the document say.
At the same time, they consider the operation in Syria to be the main foreign policy achievement of the Russian Federation.
“By spending a relatively small amount and using a limited contingent, Moscow managed to reverse the tide of the conflict in Syria. Russia helped the regime stay in power and reasserted itself as an influential player, including from a military point of view, in the Middle East. In addition, intervention in the Syrian conflict has given the modernized Russian armed forces the opportunity to test modern weapons, including cyber weapons, drones and cruise missiles,” the report says.
