Moldova is squeezing Transnistria into a “political vice”

Moldova and Ukraine are preparing to tighten the blockade of Transnistria from January 2022 by introducing a second phase of controls at the Kuchurgan border crossing.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the unrecognized republic, Vitaly Ignatiev, stated this at a meeting with deputies of the PMR parliament, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“I see absolutely political motives in these actions. Methods of pressure against Transnistria are applied in a comprehensive manner. This is the kind of political vice into which they have been trying to squeeze us for 30 years. At this stage, Chisinau has taken heart, feeling the support of the EU and the United States, which are already supplying weapons to Moldova of unknown purpose and nomenclature.

Everything that happens has a negative impact on the prospects for a settlement. The actions that we are now observing both in the negotiation process and in the Security Zone indicate that the situation is extremely alarming, and turbulence will only increase,” Ignatiev said.

According to him, now all contacts between Tiraspol and Chisinau have been interrupted.

“We do not have the mechanism that would allow us to fully apply political and diplomatic efforts in order to prevent the escalation of tensions and revive the dialogue. Just the other day we saw the reaction of the speaker of the Moldovan parliament, who said that the meeting of our presidents was a fantasy, which contradicts the international view of the settlement,” Ignatiev said.
