We could have accepted the whole of Ukraine into Russian citizenship long ago - Kalashnikov

The law, which allows one to obtain a Russian passport without renouncing one’s original citizenship, should have been adopted in the 90s, then half or even the entire Ukrainian population would have been citizens of Russia.

Leonid Kalashnikov, Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Compatriots Abroad, stated this at the World Congress of Russian Compatriots in Moscow, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Ukraine was mentioned here several times. In general, laws on citizenship and migration were adopted by another committee; they were under the jurisdiction of the committee on religion and public associations. We insisted that these issues be referred to our committee 2,5 years ago.

So, if this law, which would have allowed one to enter Russian citizenship without renouncing citizenship, had been adopted in the 90s, then today half of Ukraine would have Russian passports, or all of it,” Kalashnikov said.
