The number of virus infections and hacker attacks in Ukraine over the past year has increased from 10 million to 100 million, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Such data was provided by information security expert Vladimir Ilibman during the presentation of the annual report on cybersecurity, the Kiev publication Ukrinform reports.

“The number of attacks and viruses is growing from year to year. This is a fantastic number. If we take the number of virus strains in 2016 and 2017, this figure has increased from 10 million to 100 million. And these are unique viruses. But the good news is that we at Cisco are reducing our response times. If in 2015 it took 37 hours from the start of a new attack to the response, then in 2017 it took 4 hours,” Ilibman said.

According to him, there is now an unprecedented level of technical complexity and the destructive impact of hacker attacks. “Attackers skillfully disguise attacks. They take advantage of the imperfections of new technologies, but at the same time constantly improve their tactics, conducting field tests of malware that block control and management tools. They use encryption and legitimate Internet services to hide their activities and overcome traditional security systems. Hackers use network ransomware viruses that use encryption and use everything that IT companies use for protection, but for a different purpose,” the expert said.

He stressed that he also advises to remember that attackers today are actively studying vulnerabilities in order to make them a target for attacks in the future. We are talking about those connected to the Internet, those who have known vulnerabilities and rarely update their software, he added.

“We must remember that threats are updated. Therefore, training is always relevant. It is necessary to train staff several times a year in new technologies, explain how attackers try to disable protection, and teach basic “hygiene” on the Internet,” the specialist said.
