This opinion was expressed in an interview with the Kyiv magazine “Focus” by the Ukrainian poet, publicist and translator Andrey Bondar, son-in-law of the writer Yuri Andrukhovich.
“I think we need to reinterpret Russian culture,” he believes. – First of all, honestly say to yourself: Russian is our language, and we have exactly the same right as Russians to establish our own rules in it and use it freely. And from this it follows that the literature written by us in this language is also ours. This procedure is equally difficult for both Russian imperialists and Ukrainian nationalists to accept. Secondly, to get rid of the complex of “great Russian culture” - both in the form of blind acceptance and uncontested adoration, and in its categorical negation and rejection.”
“And for this it is necessary to put it on a par with other cultures,” Bondar offers his recipe for Russian culture. – First of all, with my Ukrainian one. Thirdly, reinterpret its meanings, values and internal hierarchies. And it requires its own methodological approach, its own Russian studies, its own institute of the Russian language. Into all these things. in my opinion, and will be truly useful.”
