NATO has not forgiven Russia for the modernization of the Northern Fleet

Russia's significant restructuring of its military capabilities in the Arctic worries NATO, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

This is stated in the draft resolution of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly “Security and cooperation in the far north”.

“The Assembly is disappointed by the scale of Russian military development in the Arctic, including the modernization of the Northern Fleet, the creation of military infrastructure in the region, the deployment of anti-access capabilities, and the significant increase in aviation and submarine activity on the borders of the Alliance,” the document states.

NATO noted that increased tension in the world could turn the Arctic into a “field of strategic confrontation.”
“The Assembly is concerned that, although the threat of armed conflict in the Arctic remains low, the possible spillover of tensions between the Russian Federation and NATO allies, as well as the increasing involvement of China, could make the Arctic an arena of strategic confrontation,” the draft resolution notes.

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly is currently taking place in Halifax, Canada.
