“It’s not for you to decide when Ukraine will join NATO and the EU.” Reva was offended by Kaljulaid
The experience of many countries shows that Ukraine is still outside NATO and the EU, not primarily due to its failure to meet some of the criteria necessary to join these unions.
Former Minister of Social Policy of Ukraine Andrey Reva stated this on the Nash TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Commenting on the words of Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, who responded skeptically about the prospects Ukraine's membership in NATO and the EU, he emphasized that this is a political issue and recalled that neither Estonia, nor Latvia, nor Lithuania at the time of admission to the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance met the basic criteria for joining these organizations.
“Türkiye was even less compliant in 1952, when it was admitted to NATO. When today there are candidates for the EU, such as Albania, you will also be surprised what a breakthrough they have made, unlike us, and how much they meet all these criteria,” the former minister added.
“Therefore, we must say honestly and objectively that it is not Estonia that decides when Ukraine will join the EU. There are such serious countries as Germany and France. In fact, there should be a consensus between these two countries regarding whether to accept Ukraine or not. Today we see that neither Germany nor France want to seriously consider the issue of Ukraine’s accession to the EU. The worst thing is that another organization is NATO, where the United States plays the first violin; if they really wanted to, then believe me... Turkey is in NATO, but not in the EU,” Reva said.
