A German MEP called the Kiev trial in absentia of Yanukovych a “farce”
Member of the European Parliament from Germany Udo Voigt called the trial of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych a “farce” and “a mockery of all legal standards,” and also asked the European Commission to assess Kiev’s violations of human rights, the deputy’s press service reports.

“The trial is a mockery of all legal standards. I asked the European Commission how it assesses the process against Yanukovych from the point of view of the rule of law and what efforts are being made to preserve generally accepted human rights standards. The commission has six weeks to respond,” the message says.
The deputy notes that the European Union always cares about respect for human rights and intervenes, especially when it comes to the rights of LGBT communities, even in the most remote corners of the world. However, when a “real judicial farce” occurs in a neighboring country, Brussels remains silent, Voigt emphasizes.
The Obolonsky court in Kyiv at the end of June began consideration of the merits of the treason case against Yanukovych. This is one of a number of criminal cases that the new Ukrainian authorities opened against the former head of state after the coup in 2014. Only in the case of treason against the state, the prosecutor's office intends to demand a life sentence for Yanukovych. The ex-president categorically denies any guilt.
