Despite protests from Kyiv, CNN refused to recognize Crimea as Ukrainian
The American news channel CNN on its website corrected the designation of Simferopol as a Russian city, but did not indicate its Ukrainian status.
So, if earlier in the photo selection dedicated to the celebration of the New Year in the world, it was written “Simferopol, Russia”, now it is indicated “Simferopol, Crimea”.
There was also a clarification from CNN, which states that “Simferopol is a city on the Crimean Peninsula, which has become a disputed region since Russia annexed it from Ukraine in 2014.”
It is noteworthy that earlier the formulation “disputed territory”, used by the American newspaper The New York Times in relation to Crimea, caused indignation in the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, where demanded to call the peninsula “occupied”.
As reported by “PolitNavigator”, CNN channel illustrated the New Year celebration in Crimea photograph from Simferopol, indicating the Russian status of the city.
After this, the Ukrainian Embassy in the United Statesexpressed his indignation, calling on the TV channel “not to follow the Russian script.”
