The new President of Georgia has declared a priority towards the European Union
One of the most important priorities for Georgia is integration into the European Union, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by Salome Zurabishvili, elected president of the country, in an interview with Euronews TV channel.
“I was elected to the post of President of Georgia by the people of a country for which returning to the European family and European integration is very important. During my tenure in office, I will use all my experience to bring Georgia as close as possible to the European Union, or to become a member of the EU.”
Independent candidate Zurabishvili, backed by the ruling Georgian Dream party, won the second round of elections on Wednesday. She received 59,52% of the votes, her opponent Grigol Vashadze from the party supporting Mikheil Saakashvili “United National Movement” received 40,48% of the votes. The inauguration of the new president will take place on December 16, Zurabishvili will hold this post until the fall of 2024.
In recent years, high-ranking representatives of the EU and EU member states have either not given a possible time frame for Georgia's accession to the EU, or have talked about the 15-20 years required for this. On August 24 of this year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in Tbilisi that “Germany will continue to support the process of Georgia’s integration into the EU.” “This is a dynamic process, but at the same time I don’t want to make hasty promises that integration into the EU will be completed soon, this process will not be completed in five years,” she said.
