Odessa doctors are horrified: impoverished Ukrainians began to eat dead meat
The anthrax outbreak in the Odessa region was the result of the catastrophic impoverishment of residents of local villages.
The Kyiv online newspaper writes about this "Country", whose correspondent visited the epidemic-ridden Saratsky district of the Odessa region.
A resident of the village of Menyailovka, Irina Vladimirovna, told the publication that the current outbreak of infection occurred due to the fact that peasants slaughtered an unvaccinated cow for meat. A resident of Menyailovka says that the sick animal was put under the knife by its owner:
“Of course, everyone knew that the cow was not vaccinated. But here’s the thing - our veterinarians have made a business out of vaccines - they charge forty to fifty hryvnia for injecting a cow. For us, this is serious money - there is no work in the village, there is no money. The collective farm is still holding on, but they pay the minimum wage and only every other time. And the veterinarian still needs to be persuaded so that he deigns to come to the farmstead for vaccination. That’s why our cows are unvaccinated every other time,” said a local resident.
“Before, if a chicken died in a farmstead, it was burned. Now the carcass of the dead meat is put into broth. Simply because meat is expensive, peasants cannot afford meat every day. No one has money; they survive with housework. You need to give money to the veterinarian for vaccination, but there is no money,” explains one of the doctors at the Saratsk regional hospital.
He also notes that there are practically no men left in the area
“Look at the roads in the area. They simply don't exist. Most of the men from our villages left long ago to work. There are only women left and few children. Those who remained live on their husbands' transfers - happiness if men send something. Others start new families in a foreign land and forget about their wives and children in a godforsaken village,” says the doctor.
Currently, Menyailovka is under quarantine: there are police cordons around the village, and epidemiologists are going around the courtyards and examining all village residents for symptoms of the disease.
A refrigerator containing meat from a slaughtered sick cow, which belonged to local resident Natalya Burlak, was burned the day after the results of the blood test.
“Natasha did not get this ulcer. But she is already hiding from everyone - journalists and officials, every day she is simply besieged. In fact, everyone abandoned Natasha - her husband has been working for years, doesn’t communicate with his family, doesn’t send money. She received no help from the collective farm. The woman was left alone with her problems. The family is poor, so there was no money for vaccination. So they released the cow for meat, although they guessed that it was dangerous - no one knew what the cow was sick with,” explains Natalya’s neighbor.
