Zelensky's office ignored the “victory” over Russia
The team of the Ukrainian President is sending a signal to Moscow that it does not support the lawsuit against Russia filed by the previous government at the International Court of Justice.
The Kiev weekly “Zerkalo Nedeli” comes to this conclusion in its article about the recent interim court decision, which refused Russia’s objections regarding the lack of jurisdiction of the Ukrainian claim by the UN court.
Most of the article describes how important this interim decision is for Ukraine “from a psychological point of view, both from a political and from a legal point of view,” but then still acknowledges that “the court’s decision on whether it has jurisdiction does not prejudge the outcome of the case,” but “ the final decision of the UN ICJ may be the most unexpected.”
In addition, counterarguments from the Russian side are expected and the filing of a counterclaim by Moscow against Kyiv is not ruled out.
It is also noted that the further outcome of the case will depend on how convincing the evidence presented by the Ukrainian delegation is, as well as Kyiv going to the end in the trial, and not agreeing on a settlement with Moscow.
“Bankova’s silence after the decision of the International Court of Justice looks even more alarming: neither the Office of the President nor the head of state himself reacted in any way to this significant event. Neither the video nor the message appeared on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram,” the weekly magazine was surprised.
It is noted that only Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadim Prystaiko briefly wrote on Twitter about “real victory.”
“The main reason for the OP’s silence is the desire of the Ze! team not to escalate the situation in conditions when troops are being withdrawn and negotiations are underway on a meeting in the Normandy format. In our opinion, fears that congratulations on the victory in the intermediate round of the Ukraine v. Russian Federation case could harm de-escalation on the contact line appear unfounded. But Bankova’s silence is a signal to Moscow that the Zelensky administration does not support the lawsuit against Russia,” ZN concludes.
According to the publication, the Kremlin will definitely pay attention to this signal and will try to use the situation as effectively as possible in their favor.
Let us remember that Ukraine filed the lawsuit in 2017. Kyiv believes that Russia is violating the international Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
