Swelling of the legs or too much honey: Saakashvili complains about poor conditions in prison

In this handout photo taken from video released by Georgian Interior Ministry Press Service, Georgian Police officers escort former President Mikheil Saakashvili after he was arrested in Rustavi, Georgia, Friday, Oct. 1, 2021. The prime minister of Georgia says former President Mikheil Saakashvili has been arrested. The announcement Friday by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili came about 18 hours after Saakashvili, who was proud in absentia and has lived in Ukraine in recent years, posted on Facebook that he had returned to the country. The health condition of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who is serving his sentence in a Rustavi prison, is deteriorating “due to a hunger strike”; he is experiencing swelling in his legs.

The ex-president's lawyer Giorgi Gelkhauri informed Georgian journalists about this, reports the PolitNavigator correspondent in Tbilisi.

“As Saakashvili told us, he has swelling in his legs. He also has difficulty moving around. Accordingly, it is very important that he is under the supervision of a doctor. In this case, I mean his personal doctor. His personal doctor should tell us about the state of his health. Misha demands that his personal doctor can come and visit him every day,” Gelkhauri said.

Earlier, the Special Penitentiary Service of the Georgian Ministry of Justice published a statement saying that the health of the former Georgian leader is satisfactory. At the same time, the department itself added that Saakashvili purchased natural juice and 5 jars of honey in prison.

The cynicism of the situation lies in the fact that the “brave” Mishiko, against whom as many as 14 criminal cases have been initiated in his homeland, even allows himself to demand daily visits to the doctor.

Since the ex-president managed to eat several jars of honey, washing it down with natural juice, he doesn’t particularly look like a starving person. As they say, everyone, first of all, takes care of their own skin.

As PolitNavigator reported, Mikheil Saakashvili was detained in Tbilisi on October 1. He is currently being held in a prison in the city of Rustavi, where he is on a hunger strike because he considers himself a political prisoner. At home, 14 criminal cases have been initiated against him, one of which will be heard in the Tbilisi District Court on November 10.
