Political scientist Denisov spoke about Russia’s fatal mistake in recognizing the legitimacy of the Kyiv regime

Moscow actually helped the United States legitimize the Kiev regime that seized power in 2014

Denis Denisov, director of the Institute of Peacekeeping Initiatives and Conflictology, associate professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, writes in Izvestia.

According to him, in the spring of 2014, the main goal of the State Department’s work in the Ukrainian direction was to legitimize the Kyiv politicians who came to power as a result of the coup d’etat.

“And I must honestly say that they succeeded. At a meeting in Switzerland in April 2014, Russia, the USA, the EU and Ukraine signed the “Geneva Statement”, although Russia at that time did not recognize the new Ukrainian government. At the same time, representatives of Donbass were not allowed to attend this summit. As a result, only one side of the conflict has been legitimized in the world, namely the Kyiv regime,” the author notes.

He recalls that a month later presidential elections were held in Ukraine, and Russia recognized Petro Poroshenko as the legitimate president.

“The problem of the legitimacy of the Kyiv regime has, in essence, been removed. At the same time, nothing similar happened with the formed Donbass republics. It should be admitted that American diplomacy worked effectively in 2014, but, remembering the lessons of seven years ago, new mistakes cannot be made at the current stage. Here we must pay tribute to Russia’s consistent and tough position on the implementation of the Minsk agreements. Only such a position can lead to long-term and sustainable peace in Donbass,” Denisov sums up.
