Political scientist: “Sleepy Joe woke up and realized that NATO and the EU were fading into the background”

Fundamental shifts are taking place in relations between the United States and the European Union as Washington recognizes the new alignment of geopolitical forces on the planet

Vladimir Vasiliev, chief researcher at the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“The American-French scandal, in which the EU is also being drawn into, cannot be considered an anomaly. This story reflects the fundamental shifts taking place in modern transatlantic relations that began under President Trump. The focus of US geopolitical interests is shifting towards the Indo-Pacific region, where China is becoming the main rival, while the importance and role of NATO and the EU are receding into the background,” Vasiliev told Kommersant.

“It took the “sleepy” Joe Biden administration eight months to wake up and understand the new alignment of geopolitical forces, which was “by default” the basis of American foreign policy under the Trump administration,” the expert believes.

According to him, this doctrine began to take shape in January 2018, when the US-China trade war broke out with the subsequent escalation of tension in relations between the two countries.
“Under these conditions, the United States’ European NATO allies are forced to become nothing more than “logistical support” for the front lines of the American-Chinese confrontation, in which, in addition to Australia, Japan, South Korea and India are beginning to play a major role,” Vasiliev concluded.

Let us recall that Australia terminated a multibillion-dollar contract with France for the construction of submarines in favor of the United States. After that Paris recalled his ambassadors from the USA and Australia.
