An act of self-immolation was committed today by a 36-year-old man in front of the police department building in the Belarusian city of Smolevichi.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus reports this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The suicide was hospitalized in extremely serious condition.
In 2016, he received treatment for mental illness and suicidal tendencies. The day before, on September 16, another suicide attempt was stopped due to problems in his personal life.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs publishes footage from a surveillance camera at the police department. It shows police officers running out of the building with a fire extinguisher to save the man.
However, a few hours before this, the Polish telegram channel Nechta published another video recording - from a mobile phone. The operator does not try to stop the suicide, but simply records what is happening.
“Nekhta” immediately announced that the man had set himself on fire as a protest against the Belarusian political regime.
