Poroshenko begins mass arrests of journalists due to threat of impeachment

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko speaks during a parliament session in Kiev, September 16, 2014. The arrest of the editor of the leading Ukrainian opposition publication Strana.UA, Igor Guzhva, is a panicky reaction of the administration of Petro Poroshenko to the news of the threat to begin impeachment proceedings against the president, says Russian political scientist Oleg Bondarenko.

“I am deeply convinced that Igor’s arrest is nothing more than a response from the Poroshenko administration to the launch of impeachment proceedings announced by the opposition.
Poroshenko was especially offended by this after his “triumphant” (20 minutes!) meeting with Trump himself.

The surprise of the start of impeachment took the PAP team by surprise at the summit in Brussels, and without thinking twice, they included a “response” - stupidly according to the list of their internal enemies. The most media-rich of them is Guzhva. This is the reason for the late visit of prosecutors to the editorial office of the publication, where at that time they might not have found the editor-in-chief himself.

Hence the ridiculousness of the charges brought against Igor for refusing to film a journalistic investigation for a bribe of $10 thousand. It’s just that Square’s prosecutors were not ready for anything more creative in the short time they had.

Igor, hold on! We are with you. Poroshenko is removing his most talented and brightest accusers. They killed Buzina on the orders of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (about which a text was published on Strana.ua just yesterday), and now they’ve taken on Igor, the scum,” Bondarenko writes in his blog.

“The goal is to destroy a well-functioning opposition publication that prevents Poroshenko from creating the illusion that everything is fine with him. In essence, Poroshenko is introducing a regime of military censorship,” the expert concluded.

Let us remind you that today in the Verkhovna Rada MP Dmitry Linko said that Guzhva’s arrest is only the beginning of mass repressions against Ukrainian journalists loyal to Russia.
