Poroshenko intends to “root” the Ukrainian language for ten years in a row

Petro Poroshenko said that in the near future he will sign a decree on establishing the status of the state language, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

He announced this during his speech on the occasion of the 204th anniversary of the birth of the Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko, the presidential press service reports.

“I would like to inform you that in the near future I will sign a decree on the development of a possibly ten-year program for rooting and strengthening the state status of the native Ukrainian language. Ahead is a decade of the Ukrainian language in Ukraine, during which positive, irreversible changes must occur. I emphasize: irreversible,” the president said.

According to Poroshenko, “a year is too short to make up for everything that the Ukrainian language has lost as a result of colonial policy.”

Poroshenko recalled that on the eve of the Shevchenko Days, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine recognized the language law “Kivalov-Kolesnichenko” of 2012 as inconsistent with the Basic Law.

“The Constitutional Court only issued a death certificate for this criminal act, but de facto its end came several years ago,” Poroshenko assures.

According to him, while the law was in the Constitutional Court, the language legislation in Ukraine was modernized.
