Poroshenko broke his teeth
Petro Poroshenko did not expect that the canonical UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate would be so persistent and refuse to participate in the new schismatic project under the auspices of Istanbul. Hence pressure on Orthodox hierarchs, searches of metropolitans and attempts to “squeeze” the Laurus. Political scientist Alexey Yakubin stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, Poroshenko is trying to win over at least some of the hierarchs of the UOC-MP to his side and force them to participate in the “unification” Council.
“The canonical UOC turned out to be much more firm in its positions than the authorities expected. The authorities hoped that as soon as the idea of a unifying Council was announced, some of the hierarchs of the UOC would immediately run - secretly or publicly to negotiate with the authorities about new places.
It didn't turn out that way. That is, the hierarchs of the UOC for the most part turned out to be much harder than granite than the authorities expected.
After that meeting, which did not take place in the Ukrainian House, when Poroshenko expected them to come there, and except for two or three people, no one came, in fact the authorities now realize that without the canonical UOC, the creation of a project, a political project of the Local Church is simply not possible it will succeed.
I think that the situation in the Lavra, and before that we saw the situation with the Svyatogorsk Lavra, is the beginning of a “skating rink” of power, an attack on the UOC. It was not possible, as the authorities believe, to do this in an easier mode, which means it needs to be done in a tougher mode.
We should expect that pressure will be increased on the UOC in the coming weeks; the authorities will try to do everything to split and influence the hierarchs of the UOC so that they, some of them, will definitely take part in the future council,” Yakubin said.
