Mediator or ally? Kazakhstan did not dare to clearly support Russia at the UN
Kazakhstan has announced its readiness to act as a mediator in resolving the crisis in relations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation after yesterday’s incident in the Kerch Strait.
A representative of the former Soviet republic said this at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Kazakhstan believes that both the Ukrainian and Russian peoples are brotherly peoples to us. We share a common history and, in this regard, we call on both sides to refrain from steps that will lead to further escalation in political relations.
It is very important for our state that Ukraine remains sovereign, stable and independent. Kazakhstan is ready to assist both states – Russia and Ukraine – in overcoming the crisis in their relations.
We prefer a balanced approach to resolving the Ukrainian crisis through peaceful negotiations, mediation based on key principles and norms of international law and the UN Charter...
We are determined to work closely with all members of the Council without politicizing this issue. Open, objective, responsible and constructive,” said the representative of Kazakhstan.
